ASSISTANT PLANNER
Wheatland County is a rural municipality located 40 km east of Calgary. The County is supported by a mixture of agriculture, industrial, oil and gas activity, and community development. The County is experiencing growth resulting in many interesting and challenging community planning and development projects.
he County is currently seeking to add an Assistant Planner to our team. The Assistant Planner will provide planning and technical support to the Planning and Development Services Department as well as professional duties associated with the current and long range planning activities of the County.

Job Description
Position: Assistant Planner
Reports to: Chief Planning Officer
Purpose of the Position:
The Assistant Planner will provide planning and technical support to the Planning and Development Services Department as well as professional duties associated with the current and long range planning activities of the County. The ability to be proficient in scheduling is paramount as all planning matters are time sensitive. Requirements of this position include a wide range of administrative and professional responsibilities that require strong organizational skills and the ability to work in a municipal government setting.
Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
Review redesignation and subdivision applications and be in communication with all applicants, the public and applicable agencies.
- -Prepare reports relating to planning matters for presentation to Council and the Municipal Planning Commission.
- -Function as a communications liaison with the public and development proponents with respect to planning projects and major applications.
- -As directed, work with Consultants retained to prepare assigned plans and projects.
- -Provide recommendations to Council and Senior Management with respect to planning matters and major development projects.
- -Assist County Council, Council Committees, the Municipal Planning Commission, Subdivision & Development Appeal Board and Staff as required.
- -Organize, schedule and participate in meetings and workshops that may extend beyond the regularly scheduled work day.
- -Prepares bylaws, correspondence, reports, presentations, agenda packages, educational material, advertisements and other required documentation associated with planning applications and assigned projects.
- -Conducts site inspections relating to matters involving planning.
- -Updating and maintaining database records and files associated with application files and projects.
- -Assist the Chief Planning Officer with reviews of all statutory documents, plans and projects.
- -Co-ordination of meetings with Senior Management.
- -Participate in opportunities pertaining to professional development.
- -Other duties as assigned

Job Specifications
To be effective in the performance of the position described, an individual would require the following:
-Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Geography or a related field preferred, post secondary training in land use planning and/or Applied Land Use Planning Certificate.
-Knowledge of the principles and practices of industrial, urban and regional planning as well as applicable legislation and regulatory requirements in Alberta.
- -A working knowledge and experience with Windows and MS Office; familiarity with GIS and CAD applications.
- -Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently in a deadline oriented environment.
- -Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
- -Strong problem solving and consensus building skills.
- -Excellent customer service skills, conflict resolution skills, presentation skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- -Eligibility for full membership in Canadian Institute of Planners.
- -Ability to learn and adapt to changing conditions.
- -Ability to organize, coordinate and complete tasks and projects efficiently.
- -Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
