Call for Input: Railway Crossings Consultation Print E-mail

The AAMDC would like to encourage member participation in a federal consultation by Transport Canada regarding railway-roadway grade crossing policies. The policies, under the Rail Safety Act, would apply to all public and private grade crossings on federally-regulated rail lines and would aim to bring them all under one common standard. They would also govern the grade crossing owners, including railway companies and road authorities, such as municipalities.

Transport Canada has released a draft Railway-Roadway Grade Crossings Policy and will be accepting written comments from grade crossing owners either electronically or by mail until April 24, 2012. To submit comments, the following links may be useful:

  • The draft Railway-Roadway Grade Crossings Policy can be found here
  • The draft Railway-Roadway Grade Crossings Standards can be found here
  • The Change Proposal and Objectives can be found here
  • The Written Submissions Guide can be found here, giving instructions on how to submit your municipality’s comments.
  • Frequently Asked Questions regarding this consultation can be found here.

The second phase of the consultations will be a series of targeted consultation meetings with grade crossing owners taking place in May and June. Those municipalities interested in attending these consultation meetings must register here prior to April 24, 2012.

The AAMDC requests that comments submitted to Transport Canada also be forwarded to the association in order to monitor the main issues coming forward from members.
