AAMDC Funding for Municipal Careers Awareness
The AAMDC is pleased to announce a new grant opportunity for rural municipalities in Alberta. In order to enhance awareness of municipal careers, we have created the AAMDC Municipal Careers Awareness Grant for the 2012 year. This grant is available to AAMDC regular member municipalities that want to carry out a municipal careers awareness campaign in 2012. One $5,000 grant will be awarded to one municipality in each of the five AAMDC districts.
To assist municipalities in their career awareness campaigns, the AAMDC would like to remind members of a valuable resource that may support you as you develop your campaign strategy. The Municipal Careers Awareness Toolkit was developed through a diverse stakeholder partnership to help municipalities produce a simple campaign to raise awareness about the opportunities and benefits of employment within the municipal sector. The Toolkit provides a “how-to” guide and includes strategies for media relations, advertising and the utilization of social media.

BACKGROUND
Alberta municipalities have been experiencing challenges in recruiting and retaining employees for a number of years. In 2008, a Municipal Careers Awareness Strategy was developed through the partnership of the Alberta Rural Municipal Administrators’ Association (ARMAA), the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA), the Local Government Administration Association (LGAA), the Society of Local Government Managers (SLGM), Alberta Municipal Affairs and the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC). From this strategy, a simplified toolkit was created to assist municipalities in their customized efforts to promote municipal careers.
During the development of the strategy and toolkit, it became clear that Albertans’ awareness of the breadth, diversity and benefits of municipal careers is lower than it should be. Without an effort to raise the general public’s awareness about municipal careers, Alberta municipalities will continue to face challenges in attracting and retaining employees.
In our ongoing effort to support rural municipalities, the AAMDC has created this grant to increase awareness of the Toolkit and to support municipalities as they endeavor to develop municipal career awareness campaigns in their local regions.
